We get some good messages from grad students and alums!
As you probably read in an earlier entry, there was a funny comment on our myspace page from a grad student who is missing out on all the fun ugrad activities.
I also want to let you in on a nice message I received from an alum who likes Babson:
First off I want to applaud you for your entrepreneurial spririt. You can “Crap” on Babson all you want, however, it has given you the tools to create your little business. Also, as a proud Alum I would tell you that I did NOT go to Babson to have fun (although I had more than enough). I chose Babson because of its strong academic/real world experience core to help prepare me for the rigors of the real cut throat business world. It did exactly that and I would challenge you to focus your energy on those individuals who have obtained a complete tool box of methodologies, principals and insights into how to achieve success in business and in life.
Although I do appreciate your efforts and the spirit that is behind them, I cannot accept your invitation to be your friend. Opinions are exactly that and I will not have my name attached to Babson in any other way than that which sheds a positive light and exemplifies the prestige of the school. I feel your intentions are to discredit not only Babson, but the institution of higher education portraying to potential students that College in about having fun and not preparing for the future.
And I responded, of course…
Thanks for the entrepreneurial comment! However I must respectfully disagree with you on a few things (as mentioned, everyone has their opinions…)
First, I was doing stuff like this in high school long before hearing of Babson. The only tools Babson gave me for this would be crap to write about and other disgruntled students who share my views. For example, I was doing accounting before coming here and was quite disappointed in FME when the professor told us to skip part of an assignment that dealt with debits and credits because that was “too confusing for this class.” I forgot most of the good, real-life business stuff I learned prior to coming here because I was bombarded with pointless busywork.
I also came here for the academics, after seeing the no. 1 in entrepreneurship ranking. Not to say I didn’t learn anything, but not like what I was expecting. After being let down in that regard, it was a disappointment not to have much fun either.
I’m not discrediting higher institutions in any way, it just happens that Babson has many anti-fun policies (and people to enforce them.) Yet the offices and admin people here to help students aren’t helpful at all.
Writing all this gave me some good story ideas! Thanks for the inspiration!
And like I said, this sparked all sorts of memories of things I’ve hated here since freshman year.

Hah, i wouldve gone with a little more “aggressive” approach, but i like your knife stabbing sarcasm none-the-less. ill bet this person has a moustache and smokes cigars with his cell phone clipped to his hip. if not, dont tell me. when they said “(although i had more than enough)” in reference to the amount of fun they had, i could totally see some middle aged dude chuckling to that. its funny that people who’ve graduated a while ago (when the campus was MORE lenient) have things a little more positive things to say. they also seem a little more close-minded. its like they cant admit to a possibility of other types of students attending this school with different mindsets that the “cookie cutter” babson student. WHY DOES EVERYONE THINK THAT THIS IS A BUSINESS!!!!!
I guess we’ll have to register as a nonprofit organization. (but that might be a bit expensive to set-up since we aren’t making a profit right now…)
HAHAHA! being an alum myself i can wholeheartedly say that babo totally sucked, regardless of the tools and real-wolrd knowledge that it has given me. i never doubted that babo was a good school as far as the education, thats one of the reasons why i picked it. i actually liked fme (although i despised IMC…but we were only the 2nd class to go through it, so it was all still retarded), and, for the exception of one other class, i pretty much loved every elective i took, so i have nothing bad to say about the education part of college at babo.
what did shock me (a little bit) was how lacking the social life was. granted, its a small school, but i thought, “boston is right there, how bad could it be?” right…very bad. and the administration does nothing to help students who try to change that. its fucking bullshit.
but i got a laugh out of that letter…because he was actually being serious. HAHAHA! i wonder what kind of fun he had “more than enough” of.
anyway, this alumni supports your work. haha
