SGA’s Big Dilemma

Since our goal here at crapcampus.com is to educate all of our readers with the inside opinion on Babson life and strife, allow me to introduce this letter from Aditi Sahani, on behalf of the Student Government Association:

“DEAR BABSON COMMUNITY – WE HAVE FAILED ONE ANOTHER

There was a very unfortunate event that compromised the integrity of ALL Babson students this weekend. A student chose to paint himself black and depict a representation of Blackface minstrelsy as his costume, and we, as a community, did nothing in response. This is not a minority issue, this is a Babson College issue. This is about stereotypes, cultures, sexism, religious beliefs, and all the issues we should address. We will NOT fall to our stereotypes, and we will stand up as a student body representing ONE.

We can only be as strong as our weakest members, and when we allow certain individuals in this community to impede on the rights and privileges of others, then we have FAILED ONE ANOTHER

In celebration of our sense of community and willingness to throw off the “Babson Stereotypes” we are having a demonstration. As a student body, we cannot allow the small group of students that are holding on to the stereotypes of a “suburban college” to hold us back. If you represent any group on campus: fraternity, ethnic group, sports team, political affiliation, and all others… and you believe in a unified Babson, represent yourself and the Babson community tomorrow at the demonstration. Don’t let a class, a friend, or a trim lunch stand between you and your chance to change the culture here at Babson College.

Let your participation be your voice!

Stand up for yourself, stand up for your beliefs, stand for your community

COME OUT AND SUPPORT ONE BABSON

ONE BABSON DEMONSTRATION THURSDAY – NOVEMBER 2nd – HORN LIBRARY – 12:45 PM

Now, I am just one writer for this site. I do not pledge to represent our opinion on a whole. Take note though, that in this email, the only people this problem (in email format) is being adressed to, is the Ugrads. Additionally, look at the logo of the SGA; “the voice of the student body” written below it. And having said that, as I read through this email, I feel left with my typical cynical sensations, but also a sense of responsibility to support zero tolerance towards stereotyping and other racist behavior. But honestly, I feel most strongly a highly repressed laugh. Maybe I really don’t understand the behavior or its implications, but seriously, I didn’t hear about this from any of my friends. Even those of a darker skin tone.

Seriously though, looking at what the email really says the issue is about, “This is about stereotypes, cultures, sexism, religious beliefs, and all the issues we should address. We will NOT fall to our stereotypes, and we will stand up as a student body representing ONE.” All of the afformentioned issues to me, seem completely irrelevant to the incident. I guess theres some facebook group about how we’re a racist campus, but seriously, check the halloween pictures of this facebook author’s profile. He dressed up as Urkel or however you spell the annoying super nerd’s name. Pardon me if I sense a touch of Irony.

As far as calling this a racist campus, I kinda feel as if that may be a lil more of an insult to Babson than an factual claim. I’m not trying to pidgeon hole this issue, but where I’m from, we’d just handle it differently. If someone made a mockery of any one of my friends races, regardless of skin tone or ethnic or religious affiliation, we’d just take the son of a bitch thats runnin his mouth out back and we’d just handle it like that. It’s a little primitive, but our violent, yet discreet and subtle zero tolerance policy seems to take care of things quite well. I know Rednecks whose best friends are black and aren’t ashamed that their white friend has a confederate flag since he’s from the south.

I’m gonna wrap this one up now. But hopefully I sparked a flame in some of you. Ponder over this issue with me a little while. I really don’t know where I should stand, but I want to encourage discussion and display some support to this kid’s cause. There are some dumbass racist muthas here, but they’re pretty isolated, and the “miniority” communities definitely have a towering advantage over such ignorant and bigoted individuals. I agree though, behavior like this shouldn’t be tolerated, and in this particular incident, I think that by the sounds of things, it mostly wasn’t. How many people even saw this guy?

Okay…are you serious right now? Are we serious enough to write a call to action to address this HUGE ISSUE Babson…”This is not a minority issue, this is a Babson College issue. This is about stereotypes, cultures, sexism, religious beliefs, and all the issues we should address.”

I’m sorry but you failed to include GENDER, SEXUALITY AND CLASS. Funny that when one year ago, a fellow classmate gets their car bashed with a baseball bat and the Babson community does nothing in response except for an email from Public Safety saying that, “Hate is not a Babson Value”.

The actions for both crimes are not matched equally which says something about the disconnect b/w the students and staff at Babson and discredits the “ONE-NESS” of the protest. While I have described this campus as cold and competitive inside and outside of the classroom, I have to taken the time to say that there are some faculty and staff who defy Babson’s reputation and promote tolerance.

Sorry kids, in case you hadn’t noticed…our campus is charged with the “issues” mentioned above. I sat in an IME class where the students response to the average American wage was $45,000. If you are nodding your head in order to agree, you are wrong ::SLAP::

While I have seen black Babson students dress as preppy Biso’s, I also saw the individual who painted his face black proclaiming, “Yea…I’m a Black guy, you don’t see those often on campus.” How many Babson students were dressed as Babson students this Halloween? A handful….

We have failed eachother by not EDUCATING EACHOTHER!

I didn’t see it and just keep hearing different things so I’m still trying to figure out what happened. In the mean time, since we’re not allowed to talk about it as that could interfere with the judicial process, I’ll have to sit back and do nothing.

Who knows, maybe the kid did it just to get something like this started? Maybe we should be thanking him… only time will tell.

Just another update about our racist campus; on Saturday, from noon to five pm, is the Black Affinity Conference.

Taken from the Affinity Conference’s website, “The Black Affinity Group is dedicated to strengthening ties between alumni and students to engage these two groups in a meaningful manner. The annual conferences provide alumni with an updated view of the college’s efforts to recruit and retain students of color; provide a forum for students and alumni to share views on strategies of recruitment, retention, and alumni involvement; and to develop plans to move forward around these college initiatives.”

Is this whole campus really racist?

I’m sorry, but until the facts are in people should refrain from beating drums and jumping on a bandwagen. I certainly do not know them, but I am also very very tired of the PC police squashing anything that has a SHRED of a possibility of mabye being done with evil intent.

Those who jump to protest too fast should take a long hard look at themselves. Look at the Duke rape protests?

Sadly, there are a number of people who make a very good living by screaming about race issues. I really hate these guys as they add nothing to society, and just make us all hate each other a little more.

People need to learn that if something offends them they should either ignore it, or if it REALLY annoys them go do what the above says.

So Babson will probably hire some more highly paid race consultants, and everyone will ignore the real problems of the school to witch hunt bigotry (which probably is not here).

To be honest, I am offended that Babson supporst groups like the BSU and the Asian Student Association, but does not have a White Student Association. I call on everyone to protest that!

I have a dream…that one day funding and recognition will not be given to groups based upon the color of their skin, or national origin, but on similar interests and hobbies and plans for the future….

  5. Urkel on November 3rd, 2006

I’m that guy that dressed like Urkel for Halloween and wrote the note on facebook. Ok, I didn’t call the campus racist. There was a question mark suggesting that people should think about whether or not is. Honestly, I like Babson a lot and in general I think that it’s a great school. However, there are a number of serious issues that go unchecked and unpunished. I don’t see why so many people are calling for a zero tolerance policy towards public acts of hate based on race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc. Honestly, I’m over the issue that happened on halloween. More than anything, I want to see Babson take action to educate the campus about different cultures and about respecting those cultures. Babson has the potential to be a an amazing institution and I want to see that come to fruition.
