22 More Universities Hit With RIAA Settlement Letters

403 college students around the country are probably pretty pissed today.

That’s because the RIAA sent out that many settlement letters yesterday to students attending universities such as: University of California Santa Cruz, Cornell University, University of Maryland College Park, North Carolina State University, Syracuse University, Ithaca College, University of Massachusetts Amherst, Columbia University, and Marshall University.

You can see the full story at Billboard.biz.

I know some people that paid about $3000 each to settle file-sharing claims last year, so if this is the same deal, that could mean students ponying up a total of $1.2 million for this.

It’s too bad that this has to happen, especially when there are completely legal music download sites for college students, such as Ruckus.

University of Florida Student Tasered By Police After Asking a Question

Just yesterday, September 17, 2007, a student was forcefully put to the ground and Tasered by police officers after he apparently asked the wrong questions during a political forum featuring John Kerry.

Andrew Meyer, a 21 year old University of Florida student, had the microphone and was asking questions about the 2004 election and certain topics dealing with Kerry and Bush. Meyer was very enthusiastic and had a number of questions, but the police were all too eager to cut him off.

Meyer was dragged away from the microphone by no less than three large police officers immediately after asking his question. Despite John Kerry having no problem answering the question, Meyer was thrown to the ground and Tasered after screaming “What did I do?”

Was this kid a terrorist? Or did Bush just rewrite proper police procedure so that “by the book” includes Tasering anyone that would question Bush’s presidency?

Even if Meyer was asking too many questions, did he deserve to be Tasered? People have been killed from that. It’s one thing if the cops are dealing with an armed robber, but what about an unarmed student using his right to peaceably assemble?

This arrest is ludicrous.
